Coworking Spaces in Gaza 2025

Against all odds, Gaza’s digital ecosystem continues to endure. When electricity, connectivity, and physical spaces became uncertain, coworking communities stepped forward to keep opportunities alive, creating environments where talent can continue to learn, work, and connect with the world. Behind every coworking space is a community of students continuing their education, trainees joining online sessions, freelancers searching for their next opportunity, remote workers sustaining their jobs, startups striving to survive, and job seekers building pathways into the digital economy. These spaces have become more than workplaces; they are lifelines for learning, income, collaboration, and hope. 

Why these spaces matter 

Since its establishment in 2011 by Mercy Corps with support from Google, Gaza Sky Geeks (GSG) has worked to create pathways for Palestinians to participate in the digital economy  through entrepreneurship support, technical training, mentorship, and connections to local and international markets.

But after the destruction of much of Gaza’s infrastructure, one fundamental challenge emerged: where could people continue to learn and work ?Imagine trying to attend your university class, deliver a project to an international client, or interview for a remote job;without knowing if you'll have electricity or internet for the next hour.

For hundreds of thousands of people in Gaza, this isn't an occasional inconvenience; it's everyday life. After nearly two years of conflict, Gaza's digital infrastructure has been devastated. According to the 2026 Gaza Rapid Damage and Needs Assessment by the United Nations, the European Union, and the World Bank, 81% of Gaza's telecommunications infrastructure has been destroyed or damaged, resulting in the near-collapse of communication and internet services across the Strip. More than 2 million people continue to rely on a communications network struggling to function under extreme conditions. (unsco.unmissions.org) 

Reliable internet has become a daily uncertainty. Repeated damage to fiber-optic networks has caused complete communication blackouts, while fuel shortages and damaged infrastructure regularly force mobile towers and internet services offline, affecting not only businesses but also education, humanitarian services, banking, and emergency communications.

Electricity presents an equally daunting challenge. Without a functioning power grid, most people depend on fragile combinations of solar systems, batteries, and fuel-powered generators,resources that are increasingly difficult and expensive to secure. For many, a working laptop and a stable internet connection have become privileges measured in hours, not days.(unsco.unmissions.org) 

 

Launching the pilot phase 

In August 2025, GSG launched the pilot phase of the Coworking Space Support Program to help sustain these critical community hubs.

More than 100 coworking spaces applied from across Gaza, with local operators demonstrating their commitment to continuing to serve their communities despite unprecedented circumstances.

Five spaces were selected for the first phase:

• Pal Life
• ATYAF
• Concept Hub
• Computer Land
• Al-Salam Coworking Space

Through this pilot, GSG provided operational support covering essential needs including electricity solutions, solar systems, internet connectivity, rent, furniture, and equipment.

The investment was designed not simply to maintain infrastructure, but to ensure that thousands of community members could continue accessing the services and opportunities they depend on.

Creating stability in an unstable environment

Keeping these spaces operational required constant problem-solving.

Reliable electricity became one of the biggest challenges. Solar systems, generators, and battery solutions helped spaces maintain working hours and reduce interruptions.

Internet connectivity remains another critical priority, as a stable connection can determine whether someone attends an online class, completes a client project, or joins an important work meeting.

Despite these challenges, coworking space operators continued showing extraordinary commitment; opening their doors, supporting their communities, and creating environments where people could continue moving forward.

The impact goes beyond numbers

During the pilot phase, the five supported spaces almost achieved measurable improvements.
